Practice ModelTM

Practice Without Pressure is the only organization where the PWP Practice Model™ prepares fearful clients for medical, dental and personal care. The PWP Practice Model™ provides a framework for people to become comfortable with procedures they once feared, resisted or avoided. This step-by-step approach promotes trust and learning. While response to the process varies, often practice leads to treatment after just a few sessions.

Practice sessions are led by PWP’s Practice Specialists, who receive comprehensive didactic and hands-on training to support individuals who have feared or avoided care. This chart shows how the PWP practice process works through collaboration to make routine care a success. When individuals come to PWP for practice, they do not come alone. Their loved ones or caregivers bring them and are an integral part of helping PWP practice specialists reshape behavior and expectations. Family members or caregivers can help individuals feel more comfortable and can help PWP staff learn what communication style works best for people during practice and treatment.

An important benefit to this partnership is what caregivers and families take away from the process as well. Through practice sessions, caregivers and family members see what the person they bring is capable of doing – and that often becomes a watershed moment in all their lives. PWP Practice Specialists direct the trainings and determine with families and individuals when a person is ready to move from practice to treatment.

PWP Practice Specialists receive three-levels of training to prepare them for their roles as guides, motivators and trainers for individuals who come to PWP for support and treatment. Dental and healthcare professionals who work with PWP learn quickly the benefits of having a Practice Specialist in the treatment room. Practice Specialists provide extra support to individuals as they receive treatment and enable clinicians to concentrate their energies on the procedures they need to complete. While clients often prefer for Practice Specialists to participate in on-going appointments, it is the goal of Practice Specialists to relinquish this support role as soon as individuals with disabilities have success in routine treatment.
